Stories from other cultures

Over the last few weeks, we have been learning how to write stories from other cultures. As well as looking at the structure of the stories, we have researched facts about countries, including native animals and typical weather events, to include in our writing. Here are the finished products- enjoy!

Kings of K’Nex

This morning, Year 5 became engineers! We were challenged to design catapults using K’Nex and table tennis balls. The children worked in pairs to create their designs before attempting to propel the balls over a short wall. The winning design will be entered into the Hertfordshire challenge- well done girls. A big thank you to Alistair Cox and Setpoint Hertfordshire for organising the session.

Gossiping about books…

Year 5 are working hard to develop critical reading skills. This week, we had a second ‘Book Gossip’ session. The main discussion point was favourite and least favourite book characters. Amongst other things, we talked as a class about how grandpas in books often present two different personalities in stories- a sensible side for their children and a mischievous side for their grandchildren. We also started to discuss the concept of animals in stories taking on human characteristics and how successful this has been. This is going to be our focus next week.

Wonderful World Book Day

Everyone made a huge effort for World Book Day and looked fabulous in their costumes. Well done to everyone for winning the upper Key Stage 2 Patron’s Cup after reading over 600 books. A fantastic effort! In addition, congratulations to Kate for reading the most books in Year 5.
